Alternative materials, such as nylon, polyester or lesser grades of steel are not suitable as they are not fit for purpose.

While primary safety measures such as hard hats and toe boards can help reduce the risk of falling objects, secondary retention nets offer an additional layer of protection. These nets are installed on items situated at height and below the work areas and are designed to catch any objects that may slip through the primary safety measures.

Secondary retention nets are particularly important in areas where there is a high risk of falling objects. For example, in offshore work sites, heavy equipment and tools are often used at height, and there is a risk of objects falling onto workers below. Likewise, in manufacturing facilities, materials and products may be transported at height, and there is a significant risk of these items falling and injuring workers or damaging equipment.
